Our History

The Journey of a Lantern

From a single room in Afghanistan to a global education platform — this is the story of a light that refused to be extinguished.

Every great movement begins with a single act of courage. For Fanoos Ashqari, that act was opening a door — a door to a small room in Afghanistan where a teacher stood ready, and students arrived hungry for knowledge. What followed is a story of resilience, expansion, and rebirth that spans nearly three decades and two continents.

1996

The First Light

In one of Afghanistan's most turbulent years, educator Ustad Mohammad Hashim opens a single room dedicated to teaching. With no funding, no institution, and no certainty — only conviction — he begins the work of educating those around him. This is the birth of Fanoos: a lantern of knowledge in a time of darkness.

1997–2000

Phase One: The Foundation

The single classroom grows. Students arrive daily, drawn by the promise of learning. Ustad Mohammad Hashim teaches with whatever materials he can find — handwritten notes, borrowed books, and an inexhaustible belief in the transformative power of education. The room becomes a community anchor.

2000–2005

Phase Two: Into the Community

Word of the teaching reaches neighboring areas. Families walk hours to bring their children. The mission expands beyond the original room, reaching into communities that have never had access to formal education. The spirit of service deepens: education is carried to the people, not the other way around.

2005–2010

Phase Three: Streets, Fields, and Beyond

Education becomes truly mobile. Lessons are taught in streets, in open fields, under trees, and in makeshift shelters. Ustad Mohammad Hashim proves that knowledge does not require infrastructure — it requires only a teacher with purpose and students with hunger for learning. The mission reaches its widest scope.

2010–2020

The Quiet Years

Conflict intensifies. Access becomes harder. But the seeds that were planted have taken root. Former students carry the knowledge forward, teaching others in their own communities. The spirit of Fanoos lives on, even when the physical presence is constrained. The flame flickers but never dies.

2024

The Reawakening

Mujtaba Hashimi — Ustad Mohammad Hashim's son, now an American technologist, educator, business leader, and computer scientist — takes up his father's mantle. Armed with the tools of the modern era, he begins rebuilding Fanoos Academy as an AI-powered education platform. The mission is reborn: education beyond borders, powered by technology, guided by legacy.

Today

A Global Platform

Fanoos Academy stands at the intersection of heritage and innovation. From its roots in a single Afghan classroom to a platform that harnesses artificial intelligence and global connectivity, it carries forward the same prayer that started it all: Rabbi Zidni Ilma — My Lord, increase me in knowledge.

The Spirit That Endures

“A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.”

The legacy of Ustad Mohammad Hashim lives on in every student who was touched by his dedication — and in the son who now carries that mission forward.
